A Hot Buffet & Disco was held in June 2019
What a fantastic evening we had – great food, brilliant disco with dancing all night which help raise £640 towards the charity Mission Direct it was held at Enfield Ignations Rugby Club – (this is a really good venue for hosting an event & is a great rugby club with a family atmosphere from young children to older players where everyone is supported)!
On 12th May, one of my members Liz Egan went to Rio de Janeiro with a charity called Mission Direct, who send people out for 2 weeks at a time to help support sustainable projects working in very poor countries around the world.
The project in Rio is a community centre based in the favella (slum), whose vision is to offer alternatives to the drug & gang-culture the kids can so easily get caught up in. They run free classes in jujitsu, ballet, gastronomy, & handicrafts, let the kids drop in, have a library & computers they can use, & just love them.
We were helping remodel the top (3rd)floor to make it more suitable. We lifted up the floor tiles by hand (equipment is expensive), knocked down 2 internal walls, bricked up & plastered 2 internal windows & started laying a new floor. All the rubble had to be lowered down in buckets & the sand hauled up. We provided the cost of the building materials (£7,500) but were £500 short, so your fundraising is most timely! The builders we were working with are finishing it off so we should see photos once its done!
In the afternoons we visited other projects there:- several after-school projects to help keep the kids off the street, a secondary school equiping young people for college/uni (some had ambitions to become a dr etc!), a project with homeless people feeding them & giving them showers & clean clothes, & a follow-on unit for drug rehab.
We met some amazing people who are dedicating their lives. And the Brazilian people are so warm: I’ve never had so many hugs!
